Swivel turning
Turning is amazing. The senses and the body have to work together. One leg steps, the other keeps balance. The eye keeps track, the ear listens. The reward of having angled the turning tool with your upper body at the right time is given by chips flying and that sound of a cut that came out perfect.

Our path to permaculture agriculture
Eight years ago, we received permission from the municipality to create a cooperative of six small permaculture forestry farms of 1 1⁄2 ha each on 11 ha of agricultural land. Here we tell you about our journey to sustainable self-sufficiency and how we organized it on our own farm.

Emergency preparedness in Arkhyttan
What happens if we who live in Arkhyttan suffer a power outage for a month in the middle of winter? Or in the middle of summer? What happens if it doesn't rain for three months? Will our wells run dry then? And how are the animals in the stables of the village farmers? What consequences will it have for us if the country is hit by conflict or war in the surrounding area?

Lomsjö 9:1
After a professional life abroad and in southern Sweden, I have been living in southern Lapland since 1986, in my parents' home in the village I grew up in. I am now 84 years old and have managed to plant a relatively large garden, make small and larger buildings and solutions that perhaps other readers might enjoy reading about.

Making a grazing plan
In the previous issue of Åter we wrote about how we can use grazing animals to strengthen the landscape's natural systems, ecosystem processes, in order to benefit soil health, biodiversity and productivity. Crucial to a good result is to understand some central biological principles and symbioses, and to avoid overgrazing of plants. But just as important to achieving the desired result is to also highlight social and economic aspects in order to get a holistic perspective on grazing planning.

Svinninge Byväg 17
When most things inexplicably chafe and feel wrong, even though everything was "perfect". When the body itself finally says no. A physical move to a simpler place to live in the countryside but also a change and a transition to a completely different type of life. Now with significantly less money in circulation but instead with infinitely more joy and satisfaction in life.

Choose the right toilet
In this series I talk about different ways to close the nutrient cycle. The first article (Åter 1/24) discussed different sewage solutions and concluded that no matter which sewage we choose, a lot is gained if we find a separate solution for the toilet. Dismantling the toilet and building an improved outdoor toilet was our first step (Åter 1/24). The next step was to build urine-separating dry toilet solutions indoors. This article provides an overview of the options available.

The greenhouse in Gölpa
We needed a greenhouse. And a winter project. An inspiring growing course was the starting point for the construction of our tunnel greenhouse made of insulating plastic sheets on a frame of curved wooden arches.

Gardvallen
How come two classical pianists chose to settle right here in Finnsjön, outside little Torsby? I value honesty highly, but to that particular question, which I get asked more often than I'm comfortable with, I don't usually answer completely honestly.

Bringing life to a sleeping village
Uddebo in Västergötland is a village that is bustling with life, but it hasn't always been that way. The efforts of a handful of villagers 20 years ago were the beginning of an enormous change that has led to the village today having around forty different initiatives and associations to gather around. Here we want to share the history of and our experiences of how to bring life to a sleeping village.

Cultivation and use of rose quince
The quince has become a very useful fruit for us at Holma Folk High School. About 20 years ago we planted the first bushes and today we use it almost daily. It is used as a substitute for lemon, and we are also testing other uses to take advantage of both the taste, pH value and pectin content.
